How to clean and sterilise toys

By about three months, your little one will be putting anything and everything in their mouth. From hands, to feet, toys, and that hair brush you forgot to pick up. Although you can't control everything they put in their mouth (unless you watch them like a hawk!), cleaning toys and what they do put their hands on can be in your control.

It's important to remember that not everything needs to be sterilised. Some things can go in the dishwasher, or can be wiped down. We've debunked the cleaning myths for you.

How often should you clean your little one's toys?

Depending on if they're playing with the toys every day or every now and then. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend:

  • Bath toys: once - twice a week. Make sure they don't sit in the bath with water in them as this can build up mould.
  • Stuffed/fluffy toys: as and when needed. Comforters in particular have your scent on it which is the most comforting part for your baby. So unless they're dirty, have vomit or poo on them we recommend leaving out of the washing machine.
  • Everyday toys: every second day - unless of course they're used in the dirt/outside.

How to clean your little ones toys:

  • Bath toys: look at the instructions as some toys with have specific requirements. However, as a general rule of thumb bath toys can be sterilised.
  • Stuffed/fluffy toys: the easiest of all toys, pop them in the washing machine. Make sure you use a baby or sensitive washing detergent to avoid any skin irritants. What you use for their clothes is perfectly fine for their toys.
  • Everyday toys: again, make sure you read the instructions. However, a general wipe down or sterilise is perfectly fine.
