Childcare: Tips to get your little one settled in

We get it, the daunting but exciting time has come for your little one to take the next leap and start daycare. It can be a big transition for the whole family, and the way you tackle it can help set your little one up for success.

We've spoken to a Childcare Director who has given us her tips based on her experience of how to get your little one prepped.

1. The week leading up to daycare commencing, start talking to your little one about daycare and what it means. Explain how much fun they will have, show them pictures of the centre and talk about all the friends they will meet.

2. You've all heard the saying 'drop and run', but this doesn't work for all children. Some who are a little more sensitive this could be abrupt and upset them more. On their first couple of weeks at drop off, go in with them and set them up. Whether that be finding an activity for them to do, finding their favourite friend or teacher. When it's time for you to leave tell them goodbye and give them a person to look for. That will act as their security when you're gone.

3. Set up a ritual. Some children need this to get in a routine and set them up for success. Whether that be a secret handshake you both do before they go into daycare, a little message in their lunch box of encouragement or giving the their favourite toy in their backpack so they can cuddle when they're not feeling comfortable.

"All in all, it's so important you set your little one up. Constant reassurance and cuddles will help them settle. It does take time but in the end they will be better for it!" said Morgan.

So there you have it. What we've personally learned in our own experience is that us (the parents) are usually the ones that struggle with it the most!
